How to sow red clover and timothy #316455

Asked April 26, 2016, 9:23 AM EDT

What are recommended amounts of seed per acre for red clover and timothy mixed? Can these be planted successfully now, late April and early May? Should the timothy be planted first and deeper, followed by the red clover? We have a field of about 15 acres that needs overhaul. It has mixed loam and clay soil with rock near surface in places. Currently mixed grass with some thistle, Johnson grass, cedar seedlings, multiflora rose etc. We just mowed with bush hog and plan to disc before planting. Thanks for your suggestions and advice.

I am concerned about the late date of seeding the timothy.  It is late now, and with the recent rainfall and your plan to work the soil, I think that it is too late.  Is this field to be used as hay, pasture, or both?  If you are planning to graze the field, orchardgrass would be a better choice than timothy and can be planted now with red clover.  I would plant 10 lbs/ A of orchardgrass, 6 lbs./A red clover, and 1 lb./A ladino clover.  The late maturing varieties of orchardgrass and red clover will be fine. This can be seeded with 300 lbs./A of 10-10-10, or according to your nutrient management plan.  This mix will be excellent for both hay and pasture for ruminants.  Timothy is the least aggressive of our forage grasses and is is easily choked out by weeds.  I usually have folks plant it the first fit day in March; weeds are emerging now that will compete with the timothy.  If you want timothy, I would work on cleaning up the perennial weeds in the field now; oats can be used a good temporary cover crop until late August, when you can successfully seed the clover/timothy mix.  You can seed timothy 10 lbs./A and red clover 6 lbs./A along with the 300 lbs./A 10-10-10 or whatever your nutrient management plan recommends.

Hello, Terry P.

Thanks very much for your detailed response.  This is the information we needed.  One of these days the rain will subside a little and we'll get back out there.  The objective first is to build up the soil and also get some hay this season.  Much appreciated!
