Are there better alternatives to Leyland Cypress? #293368

Asked December 11, 2015, 7:34 PM EST

My next door neighbor wants to plant a series of Leyland Cypress trees along our mutual fence line in an attempt to block the traffic noise on our corner. The trees would be planted on my side of the fence and my neighbor would pay for them. Is there a better alternative? I've yet to hear any good thing about Leyland Cypresses, and quite frankly, I think that they are too tall for the average suburban yard.

Expert Response

There are several lnsect and disease issues that can impact Leyland Cypress when stressed due to poor site conditions, drought, poorly drained soils, etc. They are not that winter hardy here during cold winters and can grow to about 60-70 feet high.

You have to consider the mature height and width of the plants and match to the site - sun versus shade.  Some possibilites may be upright hollies and arborvitae. Deciduous shrubs include Fothergilla, Calycanthus, and Clethra  It is a good idea to plan for a mix of different plant species so you do not lose the whole stand to an insect or disease issue. Plan for proper spacing to lessen chances of disease and to promote good air circulation.
At this point, you may want to contact some landscape designers for a site visit and recommendations. Also, contact some large nurseries as they may have landscape designers on staff. You can take a copy of a plat, plan, or take some photos with you. They should be able to advise you with specific varieties and/or plants to fit your landscape.                                                                                      mh
