Macomb County Soil Types #276766

Asked September 09, 2015, 7:43 AM EDT

I am looking for a new home in Macomb County and need to know where the good gardening soil might be. It may steer me in a different direction...my daughter is in Macomb Township and their clay is relentless! I lived in Shelby Township and it was pure sand...looking in St. Clair Shores, Fraser, Sterling Heights, and Clinton Township. Any sources would be a great help.

Expert Response

The following is a response from Mary Gerstenberger, Macomb MSU Extension Consumer Horticulture Coordinator regarding your question:
Based on what I could find in the Soil Survey for Macomb County Michigan, USDA Soil Conservation Service book from 1971 (edition in our office) the lower part of Macomb County is almost all poorly drained soils (from experience, mostly clay). The area with best drainage is the north end of the county in Bruce Township and part of Washington Township (Probably sandy soils). Macomb tends to be either clay or sand. There is a soil survey online: http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/surveylist/soils/survey/state/?stateId=MI. It allows you to choose by county for Michigan.

The other option is to call Macomb Planning and Economic Development at<personal data hidden> and see if someone in mapping could help them."
