Getting rid of yellow parentucellia - Parentucellia viscosa #255006

Asked June 17, 2015, 7:22 PM EDT

Is there a spray I can use to get rid of this weed that's invading my pastures? At least it's not tansy, but it's still pretty pervasive. Will Roundup or Crossbow work?

Would it help to sow pasture seed next year to choke it out if I can't kill it with a spray?

Expert Response

Targeted chemical control combined with some mowing/digging out plants to limit seed production would be the best course of action at this point in the year.
According to our Extension Weeds Specialist on campus, spot spraying with chlorsulfuron (Telar) will be the best choice of herbicides for yellow glandweed. There is a good set of mixing/spot spraying instructions on the Telar label.
The regular phenoxy treatments (dicamba, 2,4-D, MCPA, aminopyralid) don't seem to be as effective.

Rotational grazing practices to allow for adequate grass regrowth will help.  If is not a strong forage grass population in the pasture then renovating the pasture and tending to the nutrient requirements of the grass to enhance plant vigor will help in the long run.  Renovation is typically done in the fall, unless irrigation is available. There are several publications on the OSU Extension Service Small Farms pasture website, including links to a renovation guide and fertilizer guide that will be useful to you.
