Banyan tree root damage potential #253438

A few years ago we purchased a small cutting from the famous Thomas Edison banyan tree (Ficus benghalenis) and decided to plant it in the backyard thinking it would take years for it to mature into a large tree. It really likes the climate and has grown 20' in just a few years. I'm getting mixed guidance in what I should do to help protect our home foundation from potential future root damage. I've read places where the tree absolutely must be removed. Others have advised that a root barrier system would protect our home while even others think nothing needs to be done. We've already started to try to get some small potted cuttings to root just in case I need to destroy the tree with the intent we would keep them potted. This is a beautiful shade tree and I hate to lose it. What is the best course of action?
