I am considering dethatch... #232122

I am considering dethatching my lawn. I live in Shorewood, MN. My question is, 1. Is dethatching good for my lawn? and when is the proper time to dethatch? I don't want to do it too early and freeze young shoots, but I don't want to do it too late and uproot new growth. Alternatively, is aerating in the fall going to accomplish the same thing as dethatching?

Dethatching only needs to be done if there is an inch or more built up on your lawn.  You can check this by cutting a two-inch deep wedge from your lawn.  If the thatch layer between the green of the lawn and the soil is greater than 1/2" then dethatching should be done.  Fall is the preferred time for doing this because the process disrupts weed seeds and they can germinate, although doing it in the spring won't hurt your lawn. Aeration is actually a good prevention for dethatching.  The best times to do that are August-October.  You an aerate in the spring if you water well regularly and frequently after aerating.  You should wait until you've mowed twice.
