Vent Sexing Ducklings #228895

Asked February 25, 2015, 1:40 PM EST

Hi! I'm very interested in learning how to vent sex ducklings. I've heard the best way to learn without hurting the ducklings is to have someone train you/demonstrate it to you in person. I've contacted lots of feed stores and farms in my area to try to find someone willing to teach me, but haven't had any luck. There's lots of how-to videos online, but most of them come with disclaimers that vent sexing without prior experience can really do a lot of harm to the little guys. Are there other resources in my area? Or are there specific things to avoid or be aware of if it's possible to learn on my own without hurting my ducklings. Thank you!

Expert Response

There are no formal resources that I know of to learn vent sexing with ducks or chickens either.  An experienced duck breeder may be able to help, David Holderread, Philomath OR has been breeding ducks and geese for decades.  he may know of someone or be willing to help himself.

While learning, either with your own birds or others, there may be injury to the some the ducklings until you learn how much pressure is needed.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  there is not much call for this skill these days.
