Is it too late to sow bluebonnet seeds? #224610

Asked January 15, 2015, 1:53 PM EST

I live in Comal County. Is it too late to plant bluebonnet seeds? I have wild seeds and prepackaged ones.

Expert Response

Hello,

The ideal time to sow scarified bluebonnet seed is late September through the month of October.  Hopefully we have significant rainfall during that time frame, both for the germination of the seed and establishment of the plants throughout winter.  Otherwise, supplement irrigation may be needed. On non-scarified seed, the time frame is the same, but expect inconstant germination throughout that season and possibly years afterwards.  Transplants can be planted now as another option.

Yes, I'm sorry, I guess I didn't clarify. I know the ideal time, but if I sow now, will any seeds grow or am I wasting my time and the seed? If I wait until next year, will the seeds be viable? Thanks.

Sow the seeds next October.

Plant transplants now.
