seedling maple trees #203965

Asked August 01, 2014, 2:39 PM EDT

how can I get rid of the seedling maple trees that are growing everywhere in my yard. They are even in the mulch. Our dog Charlie has many allergies and we are afraid to use commercial products. I currently have a recipe of 1/2 gal applecider vinegar, 1/2 half cup of salt and 1 teaspoon of dawn dish soap. It fades them but not sure it kills them. It does not kill thistles.

Expert Response

Thanks for contacting eXtension with this question.  Maple seedlings in the grass will not withstand mowing.  As for those growing in mulch and other non-mowed areas, we don't recommend any home remedies, only EPA registered products.  If you secured your dog for a few hours, you could spray the  seedlings with Roundup or similar product (active ingredient glyphosate). It doesn't take much spray contacting the seedling leaves and many formulations dry within an hour or less.  Purchase a ready-to-use formulation for ease of application.  Follow all label directions.
