We have horses and are moving to a property that has black walnut trees in what will be the pastures. I know that shavings from walnut trees are toxic to horses, so what do I do with the trees in our soon to be pastures? There's close to 20 trees varying in maturity. Do we cut them all down, if so what's the best way to prevent horses from chewing on the stumps? Total stump removal is not an option at this time and neither is fencing off the trees. Please help! Thanks!

Expert Response
All parts of Blacks Walnut can be toxic, with the roots containing the highest concentration of juglone. The bark, shavings, and leaves can also contain the poison. If fencing and stump removal are not options I would suggest cutting the trees so the stumps are at ground level. This will minimize contact. A healthy pasture will keep the horses focused on eating the grass, and not be so interested in the black walnut. Let me know if you have other questions.
