Genista caterpillars are devouring my mountain laurels. Will diatomaceous earth kill them? #179702

I've read that generally no treatment is necessary for Genista caterpillars, but they are devouring my 2 mountain laurels! Could this be the reason they haven't bloomed in 2 years? Will diatomaceous earth kill them?

Expert Response

Hello, The caterpillars are eating all the new growth where potential flower buds emerge from. So, yes this affects the bloom cycle. Liquid Bt, Spinosad and SEVIN work affectively on caterpillar control. Always read and follow label instructions. DE will not work.
