After effects of Spinach #146229

Asked August 09, 2013, 12:44 PM EDT

After I eat spinach I feel a film on my teeth that I don't get when I eat other lettuce/vegetables. Can you tell me why that is?

Expert Response

Hello and thanks for your question. I know exactly what you are talking about as I have had the same sensation when eating spinach. The chalky feeling on your teeth is a result of the oxalic acid being released from the spinach leaves when you chew the spinach. Hope this helps. Kathleen Splane <personal data hidden>
