Strange brand? #121657

Asked April 15, 2013, 12:04 AM EDT

Hi there, my name is Taylor Thompson. Im from Ontario, Canada. I purchased my first horse from a feedlot in New Jersey in 2011. Since then i have noticed that my mare, who we have no information on, has a brand on her left jaw. Ive asked around and no one has any idea what the brand could be.. Its reallly odd, almost a mishappen clover leaf. She is a dapple gray mare named Gray Ghost, se came with that name. Everyone ive asked said she is definitely a Quarter horse but i cant be sure. Shes about 7 years old now and i would love if you could help me find out where she came from or anything. Thanks! P.S I have plenty of photos of my mare and the brand if anyone is willing to help us!

Expert Response

Hi Taylor,
This can be tricky if you don't have any further information about your mare. If you know where she was born, I would start by looking at the registered brands for that state.  Each state has a brand commission linked to the department of livestock and forestry.  If the brand is registered in New Jersey, they should have record of who the brand is owned by and a way to contact that person.  The hardest part about your situation is going to be realizing that if you purchased her from a feedlot, she may not have been born in the same state.  This will only broaden your search.  However my best suggestion is to look up each states brand commission and look up registered brands and compare them to the brand on your mare.  Unfortunately there is no current way that I am aware of to easily search for brands.  Wish I could be more help.

Good Luck!
