I have heard that used coffee grounds can help enrich some soils but haven't heard this as a regular practice in Colorado.  Shall we use coffee grounds in our gardens along the Front Range?  Or is this more a gardening myth?

I have been collecting coffee grounds from Starbucks all winter. I've picked up almost 30 pounds a day all winter. I've collected over two tons of coffee grounds. I have been spreading the grounds over the two city lots that are entirely gardens. I spread them all over the gardens. Should I add lime with the grounds? We have a farmer come in and plow both lots in the Spring. Should I plan to get the grounds again next winter? Spread out there doesn't seem to be too much coffee grounds on the lots. I live in Falcon Heights by the St. Paul Farm Campus. I have two city lots that are entirely gardens. I have been getting a daily bag of coffee grounds from a nearby Starbucks that I've spread over the two lots all winter. I've just stopped getting the grounds because the recent melting has my two paths to the gardens muddy and I don't want to hurt the lawn . I've spread the grounds over the two lots by simply hauling the bags of grounds out to the garden area and spread them on the snow all over the lots. In the Spring I'll have a farmer with a plow come in and plow up the plots. So I believe the grounds will be underground and not a real problem. Here is my question. I've averaged 30 pounds of grounds a day from Starbucks. I have spread it all over the two lots. A total of over two tons. To be exact, 4,301 pounds of coffee grounds. I had no idea I'd be getting that much in grounds. Now the grounds were wet when I picked them up so the total is less than I've measured but it's still a lot of grounds. The grounds are used so I've been told that some of the nitrogen will have been washed away and I hope it mainly improves the texture of the soil. And the worms love it. I'm wondering if I've created a problem for myself with this much grounds. And should I consider getting approximately that much grounds next year? Any thoughts? Tom Staffa

Coffee chaff as winter garden cover? #430768

Hello. I have read that it can be good to put a cover crop or mulch on top of your garden bed over the winter. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to put a of coffee bean chaff on top and either remove it or mix it into the soil when spring comes. I have access to endless amounts for free. I have read it is great in compost. Thank you so much for your help and garden wisdom!

EGGPLANT & PEPPERS IN ORGANIC COMMUNITY GARDEN #412289

I HAVE 2 PROBLEMS:
1. MY EGGPLANTS ARE GROWING SLOW WITH LOTS OF BLOSSOMS, BUT ARE NOT SETTING FRUIT.
2. MY PEPPERS ARE BARELY GROWING.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADDITIVES THIS TIME OF YEAR? WE ARE ORGANIC. USED COFFEE GROUNDS IN THE SPRING. NO OTHER SOIL AMENDMENTS. SOIL TEST CAME OUT AWESOME 3 YEARS AGO. ROTATING CROPS.

Hi, my name is Oto and I am from Slovakia in Europe. I was looking for information about using Coffee grounds for compost or as fertilizer and I found your document "Coffee Grounds and Composting". I would be very grateful if you could answer my questions: If I want to storage coffee grounds for longer time (from few weeks to few months) a not drying it. Is it good idea to storage it in plastic trash bin? I read that if grounds are not dried that it get mold. Are grounds still appropriate for direct soil fertilization or it should go to compost then? If no, what is the reason why it can not go to soil directly. Thank you very much for your time Best regards
