I have 15 white pine trees about 6 years old. They all seem to be dying, they are turning brown from the trunk out. Please help me save them, I do not know what the problem or solution is. thank you

juniper scale? how to trewatr? #775934

Hi- I have wichita junipers that are very brittle... the needles fall off when touched... and on closer inspection they look like they have scale. These are big shrubs, ,maybe 6-7' tall and valuabl e to screening in my landscape. I'm hoping they might recover if I treat them with horticultural oil. Should I apply this fall or wait until spring? Evergreen decline #774008

Hello, When we built our home 3 years ago this evergreen appeared quite healthy. This summer in particular, it seems to have declined significantly with a lot of branches becoming bare and needles browning. Do you have suggestions as to what we can do to make this tree healthier? Carpenter Ants #773603

I looked at the guide on Ants from OSU ext, and I'm trying to figure out if I have carpenter ants. There are ants about .75 of 1/2 inch that have a path from under my house (one location only) to the yard. Bigger ones were found on my hummingbird feeder. The smaller ones go across my front porch one at a time spaced maybe 3 feet apart. I had someone from a pest company look at them and look under the house. He didn't see activity under the house, but what he could access was limited. Yet he recommends that their company spray around the house. That the spray will also effect other insects such as spiders. My questions is: Do I need a professional pest co. to apply poison around the house.? If treatment is necessary, is there a more environmental friendly method?

Cinch Bugs??? #771223

I have an area next to the driveway where there are numerous small patches of dead grass. The rest of the yard is picture perfect. It looks like what you typically see with Cinch Bug damage. I pull out the dead grass and see bugs that look more like tiny ants. Our soil is very sandy and we have ants everywhere but they have never really been a problem. So the first question is... can ants do damage similar to Cinch bugs or am I probably just looking at cinch bugs in the first place. Second question (and this one is a real puzzle).... next to the driveway by these dead spots is a single hole into the turf about the size of a quarter. This is not a mole entrance. No grubs and no moles for the last 4-5 years. I can't see where it goes as the soil caves in as soon as I pull the sod up. Maybe a vole but no tunnels on top and nothing I can follow. My first thought is the two are related somehow. Either whatever is creating the small hole is eating the roots or the insects eating the roots. But, there are no raised area like what you would see with a mole and the hole is MUCH smaller than a mole tunnel. Any ideas on either? Lastly, if it is insect damage, is it too late to apply an insecticide to this area? The lawn service put down an insecticide earlier this growing season and the rest of the yard looks great. I'm thinking maybe this area was missed?

Help! ANTS! #763531

There is a large ant nest in my garden, and may have spread into the lawn. What do I do? The ants vary from half inch long, black to tiny, tiny black ants, Very few and occasionally I will see one inside the house. My husband used to encircle the house with something but he passed away after extended heart condition a year ago. In the last month I have applied a SPectracide that features Carpenter Ants on the front. It deters for s few days and then the ants run all over it. Do I have to call an exterminator?

What is the most effective way to kill ants in the lawn? I have tried many chemical options and hired a lawn service to apply bifenthrin with no lasting results. The mounds continue and I have spots dying in my lawn.

Carpenter Ants #762816

I'm pretty sure I have carpenter ants. Have been sharing my house with several species of ants and other Hymenoptera for past 20 years -- They had occasionally been a nuisance but usually seemed "seasonal" and minimally destructive. Now I am noticing the small piles of sawdust in the front of my garage below the wood siding and suspect that they are taking up residence in YET another part of the house. I am about have to some roof repairs and painting done but thought I should deal with these ants first. I have never used an exterminator before due to concerns for health of pets, family and surrounding wildlife. I am not sure who in my area to trust and what I should look for in a reputable company. Am not looking forward to having poisons pumped into my house or walls.
