Green Hawthorn tree - Winter King #803676

Hello - your page on green hawthorn says, "The native species grows in partial shade to full shade; ‘Winter King’ cultivar grows in filtered shade to full sun." I am interested in planting a green hawthorn is a spot that gets a lot of sun, and like the disease resistance of the Winter King cultivar, but I prefer to use native plants. Is the Winter King cultivar native to the Eastern Shore of Maryland? Does it have wildlife value? I want a spring flowering tree that is pollinator and bird friendly. I was thinking about redbud, but was advised they prefer more shade, which is when the green hawthorn caught my eye. Thank you.

Grape Vine Leaf Damage #800759

I have 3 grape vines that I planted last year, which are growing up onto my pergola. 2 are Somerset Seedless, and 1 is King of the North. The King of the North grape vine leaves have a lot of rust colored blemishes on them. It's similar to . I've especially noticed that recently, after some pruning where I cut off ~80% of the grape clusters, and ~10% of the vine a week or two ago. I've attached photos of the blemished leaves and a mostly healthy looking grape cluster. All the attached photos are of the King of the North vine. What might be affecting my grape vine? And what if anything should I be doing about it? The 2 Somerset Seedless grapes seem healthy as far as I can tell. There aren't any of the rust colored blemishes on the leaves, and the grape clusters seem okay, though I noticed that some of the grapes have very faint grayish spots on them. One of the Somerset Seedless vines died back to a few inches above the ground over the winter, but seems to be doing well now. Thanks, Evan

Safest mulch for pollinator gardens #800373

I plant only pollinator flower gardens and want to be sure the wood mulch I use is best for the soil. I've been using red-dyed mulch that seems to be made up mainly of shredded pallets. I avoid cedar that might be coming from the southern US where trees are cut for this purpose. PLEASE advise as to what is best for an organic purest like me.

Termites in mulch near foundations #797561

We live in the 55+ community of Bay Bridge Cove on Kent Island. Several residents have discovered termites in the mulch that abuts the foundations of their homes. In this community, all buildings are landscaped in a similar fashion. End units have mulch applied in approximately 4' widths along the front and side of each building. No membrane barriers were applied to the ground prior to the installation of the mulch. trying to find the answer to some questions: 1. Should we move the mulch away from the base of the foundation? If yes, how far? 2. Should we apply pesticide (preferably organic) to the existing mulch on a periodic basis? 3. What other measures should we take to prevent termites infestations and/or attacking the foundations or wood sill plates near our homes? 4. Should we regrade the foundation immediately near our foundations to provide adequate runoff off water? 5. What is the maximum depth that we should apply mulch near our foundations? 6. Should we install a barrier between the mulch and the soil to inhibit termites?

I'm new to Ohio and trying to keep my yard and flower beds manageable this year. We moved up from Mississippi in November of 2020. To OverSeed or Not To OverSeed #768721

Rather large lawn Twinsburg OH (Summit County), lawn being taken over by crabgrass. Lawn care provider would like to over seed now to otherwise improve turf and infill existing bare spots, some in shaded areas. Questions: 1. Is now an acceptable time to over seed and aerate, or would later in fall, or early spring, when cooler temperatures and added moisture prevail be preferable? Lawn will also be fertilised in fall and early spring and broadleaf weed control added to regimen. 2. My understanding crabgrass dies over winter and re-emerges in spring. Reemergent crabgrass killer will be applied in spring, assuming this is best way to control crabgrass? 3. Key issue, if lawn is over seeded and aerated now, or spring, would crabgrass killer also kill newly spread seed? 4. Most of lawn receives full sun, as noted, also considerable shade. Should separate seed choices be made to accommodate sun and shade, or would you recommend single generic seed? Thank you for your recommendations!
