Red Maple Trees & possible carpenter ant infestation??? #852696

Several of my neighbors are wanting to cut down a Red Maple at the entry to our neighborhood. I can not find any trace of ants but we did recently have a limb removed. The tree lined entryway is beautiful & is a blaze with color now. How can we determine if the tree is severely compromised & in need of removal. I would hate to remove a viable tree. I did find some "mealy" bugs in one small cavity but the wood appeared to be firm when prodded with a wooden skewer. We have Blanchard coming out tomorrow to give an opinion.

We have a stressed white pine in our front yard on the shore of lake superior (see attached pictures). Planted as a seedling 15 to 20 years ago in gravely soil. I did just remove thimbleberry bushes around the base. What else can we do? Fertilize and water? what kind of fertilizer?

I live in the Cleveland area and have had many of my native plants eaten by deer and rabbits. Commercial products like Liquid Fence have lost their effectiveness in my gardens. I have read that homemade solutions of ground red pepper, garlic, oil and mild dish soap can deter wildlife from eating plants. Would using these harm or deter bees and other pollinators from visiting my plants? I don't want to use them if that is the case. Online entries I researched provided different answers. Thanks very much.

At the end of last summer I had a little red squirrel that started digging in my pots, and I see that it has started already this year. I spend loads of time growing my dahlias and do not need these annoying squirrels digging up my tubers. I have tried essential oils and poking toothpicks up in the soil and they keep them away for a day or two and then they move on and the deterrent doesnt bother them anymore. I could really use some help with this problem. It’s frustrating. I already use plant stands for all of my plants so the rabbits don’t eat them but the stands do not matter to the squirrels. I am wondering what options I have to get them out of my planters. I would greatly appreciate the help.
