DaraMonifah Cooper, was born and raised on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and graduated from the Charlotte Amalie High School after being awarded with a full scholarship as the only early admission student to the University of the Virgin Islands during her senior year of 1996-1997. Her educational experience included completion of a B.A. in Communication specializing in Layout and Publication Design (UVI) with concentrations in both Music and Art. During the latter years of her schooling, she served in various student and temporary positions within the Cooperative Extension Service, not only in her original capacity as a Graphic Designer specializing in Publication Layout, but also assisting in other research and public service areas ranging from Agriculture and Natural Resources to the 4-H/Family & Consumer Sciences. It was during her leading role as Project Assistant for the ANR AgriTourism Project that she was promoted to a full-time position within CES. Finalizing her thesis, she is in the last leg of obtaining her masters degree in New Media Journalism from Full Sail University.
Cooper also volunteers as a freelance Photographer/Graphic Designer/Event Organizer with the University of the Virgin Islands as well as a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and regional organizations. Some of the most noted participation includes The Rock Collective (Outreach, Media & Communications), Per Ankh, Inc. (Outreach, Media & Communications), have served on the Department of Human Services Consumer Advisory Committee, and was a Family Resource Center V.I. Victim Advocate among other service oriented past times.
She has acquired various technical, organizational, communicative, and interpersonal skills and has been responsible for a wide range of specific tasks including supervising, managing, and customer service. Her office skills include professional level computer literacy*, business and telephone etiquette, above average use of office equipment, preparing graphic presentations including print and online media, website development and management, social media management.
She currently serves and the St. Thomas campus computer & technology instructor as well as the University's CES social media manager as she continues to keep UVICES branded on the cutting edge with the latest and most reputable social media. Cooper also hosts the weekly CES radio program at the University radio station, where she is also station and programming manager. Her goal is to assist the CES unit with widening their outreach abilities through the use of various media sources, including but not limited to print publications, the internet, public television stations, radio programs, in-school and after school visits and programs.
She learns and uses up-to-date software, multi-media and social media to produce various programs, publications and learning materials for public education and/or the training of students, faculty and staff. Along the way she has used much of what she learned to develop curriculum materials for using multi-sensory media to teach and share information in the various areas at levels from Pre-K through the university level in the Caribbean, on the U.S. mainland and abroad.
She is the natural mother of three and plays vital mentorship roles in various youth organizations including, but not limited to 4-H Summer Program and clubs. In her "spare time," she manages her my non-profits: KWANZAA365 & Sankofa Saturdays Youth Cultural Education Initiative, where she further uses her media and documentation skills to pass on what she knows to the younger generation through multi-media education and community service.
