The deer kept eating the top of this plant off before it could flower so I put a cage around it. Please identify this plant for me. I have more photos if you need them. Thanks.

Is this a praying mantis? All the others I have seen recently have reached maturity but this one is so small. It had just shed it's skin when I saw it and took this photo a few days ago.

I recently moved into a newly built house in a wooded rural area near Manchester, Maryland. There are several spiders which have set up webs over some of the windows and doors of the house. The pictures attached show one of them. One picture is from the outside showing the top of the spider, the other picture is from the inside and shows the bottom of the spider. The spider's body is about 5/8" long and total length as shown in the photos is about 1 1/4". The spiders are quite beautiful and I don't really want to harm them. Do you know what kind of spiders these are? Do they pose any kind of hazard to people or pets? Thanks, John
I have a National No. 7 pressure canner from my grandmothers attic. I have used it for low acid food canning and not died or gotten sick. However each time I use it, I think, "I should get this tested". I know some state extension services do that, does Maryland's? Who do I contact? Thank you Tom Zeller

Hi again. This might seem incredibly naive, but what's the purpose of the tray that comes with planting containers, either clay or plastic? For the most part, they are larger than the diameter of the bottom of the pot. All they seem to do is collect water for mosquitoes to breed. Why does anyone need these outdoors? Similarly, I have a few pots with form-fitting bottoms. I'm thinking that maybe this provides a reservoir for the roots to tap into. But the roots would have to be rather deep (I plant leeks, carrots, and shallow root vegetables) to reach the bottom of a foot-high pot. I don't think the water in the try can evaporate back into the soil or wick up to keep it moist, can it? I can understand trays for indoor plants not outdoor plants. Thanks.

Whom may I call regarding the tax calculations related to a sale of a conservation easement to the Carroll County Commissioners? I'm needing some general guidance as to how to handle the sale.
I had my garden soil tested and it came back low in potassium. I thought of using ash from charcoal brickettes as a source of potatssium but I received this comment: Hi Walter – that may not be a good idea. Charcoal briquettes nowadays are full of additives: http://www.ehow.com/info_10050746_can-ashes-charcoal-briquettes-used-fertilizer.html. They can be used for paths and to keep weeds down, though. Wood ash from a fireplace is best for veggie gardens. If bricettes are completely burned to ash are there still dangerous additives at high levels remaining? I see various comments on the web
Our condo complex in Silver Spring looks like it has a terrible infestation of sider mites all over trees and shrubs and it's spreading!!! The management is terrible and owners are concerned we will lose all of our beautiful shrubs and trees. What can we do? The trees and shrubs look as if they are covered in spider webs and the leaves are dying and have holes eaten in them. I read an article on the internet that said the county extension center may help but I can't find Montgomery County's EC. Help!!
