What is this plant - it was growing in our vegetable garden - about 10 feet tall - very strong aroma - I started sneezing violently after removing it. Reddish striped stems (woody) and tiny yellow flowers on top - soft, fern- like leaves.

Using poison rat baits around cats and dogs

I requested information about Norway rats which are under my deck and are "invading other areas of Old Greenbelt". I received a prompt reply with an Extension publication. We were able to trap and drown humanely one rat, but after that, no more.
Would it be dangerous to use poison baits under the deck? My cats and raccoons have gone under it. If my cat attacks a poisoned rat still alive, will he ingest some of the poison? I am nervous to go this route. Also my neighbor in the Cooperative in which I live, understandably does not want me to use them either (she has two large dogs). Even my cat who hunts even larger birds (which I don't like him doing) is afraid of the rats under the deck (I hope there are not snakes there either!).

I am afraid of the rats getting in my attic and home during the winter months and also reproducing inside and outdoors. Mice have lived in my attic in the winter months -- these are very old homes dating back to the 1940s and less.

Ambrosia Beetle Infestation

I have an ambrosia infestation on a white oak. I have read your article "Ambrosia Beetles in Maryland" and want to make sure that I am understanding it correctly. Once the frass is coming out from the tree, is it too late to spray? I have one tree guy who says to spray now and another who says to wait. What do you say? This tree is losing lots of branches and will most likely die in the next couple of years, but I am hoping to get a little more life from it still.

This summer I have seen what I think is some kind of fruit fly that I have never seen before in my yard in southern MD. It is about 1/2 cm long with a black/brown 3-part body and translucent wings with black splotches across them. It holds its wings out flat and angled back like a jet plane. It has small stubby antennae. I have not seen these insects on any plants, but mainly on the siding on the west side of our house; in groups of 4 to 5. What is this insect?

Our questions have to do with our lawn. We have a large wooded lot---about 1/2 lawn and flower beds and 1/2 woods. The lawn has deteriorated to the point where we wonder whether we must dig it up and start over; we need an expert opinion about that. Different areas have different sorts of problems: some spots are difficult to grow grass; some spots are subject to erosion; most areas have been invaded by a variety of weeds, broad-leaf plants, and sometimes moss. Can you give us contact information for an expert who could come look at the situation and advise us? Could you tell us the steps we would need to take in re-doing our lawn--for example, do we need to get a soil analysis first? How do we prepare soil for re-seeding, etc.?
We know that fall is the time to tackle this issue and that "tall fescue is the best all-purpose turf for MD."
Thanks so much, Joan and Don Griggs P.S. Let us know if several photos of particular spots would help.

I have some type of borer infesting my ash tree. my subdivision is relatively new(7 yrs) with ash trees lining the street. I noticed what looked like saw dust around the base of the trunk(this is maybe the 2nd season, but could have been longer). I inspected more closely and discovered small holes ~1/8" in diameter with the frass(as I have now learned the term) coming out of the hole. the holes do not seem to be D-shaped as with the Emerald Ash Borer, but instead round. In the past week or so I have noted empty shells sticking out of the holes and my internet research suggests the Clearwing Ash Borer Moth. I also saw what appeared to be a wasp (which I now believe to be the Clearwing Ash Borer) on the tree and it was mating with a smaller of the same. My street is the only one in the neighborhood with this type of tree lining the street. The trees are ~10ft tall and many look very unhealthy with barren branches. Most of the trunks are dotted with holes and the bark is peeling off. I would like to know (1) am I dealing with Clearwing Ash Borer Moth? (2) how do I get rid of it? (3)what is the expected fate of my tree? (4) is it sensible to treat my tree if the others on the street remain untreated?

I have a number of euonymus with crown gall. I have sent photos to a number of nurseries in the area and have taken branches with galls to the staff at Sun Nurseries for diagnosis. I have a specimen paperbark maple growing about 4 feet from the closest infected bush and a Knock Out rose much closer on 3 sides. Several questions--Is the 15 foot paperbark maple in jeopardy? There was a paperbark seedling nestled in the euonymus that had a marble sized lump when I cut it our yesterday, but I don't know if it was crown gall. When I cut the Knock Out back this year, won't it most likely get it? I thought of removing the infected plants, but I gather the soil would still be a problem for 2-3 years and I would have to get every speck of soil too. I've been told that water carries it to other plants with breaks in the bark too . Suggestions?

The boxwoods at my new house were planted about a year ago. They are in full sun. I watered them about once a week this summer. They were fine until late August when three of them suddenly had leaf-loss and browning. Can they be saved? Should I dig them up or should I leave them to see if they will be able to come back? Thanks so much for any help you can give me on this.

I am losing three or four of my border shrubs (yews I believe). These were part of a long border that have been there before I bought the house so they may be over 40 years old. Two started looking bad in the late spring with some branch ends turning yellow and then brown. We were advised to remove leaves from under the shrubs and spray with Bayer Insect and Disease for spider mites. I did this several times, but there was little improvement. In the last 3 weeks, these two have rapidly declined to the point where I believe they need to be removed. I have two more along the line that are starting to look like they are declining. I had another across the yard which rapidly declined and died earlier this summer. I now have a six in the front of my house looking the same. I have never had this experience before but then again I'm not sure it rained as much as it had earlier. I have been advised that this could be a drainage issue or possibly phytopthera. I have attached several photos; can send several more to an e-mail address. Obviously, I'm concerned about the fate of the other bushes and what I might be able to use to replace the missing bushes and not suffer the same fate.
