We found this rather large hornet on our screen door. It looks really scary and I wasn't sure if it was a cicada killer. It seemed different almost like a Japanese hornet.
Could you please ID this plant and advise how to care for it. Supposed to be a cherry tree.
Could you please IF this tree and advise on its care? Many thanks.
What is the solution for Bradford pear tree leaves turning dark like they are dying?
My residence sits on a treed lot in Bethesda with a fairly dense tree canopy that limits the sunlight most of the day. What seed is recommended for deep shade? I know that the selection is very limited, and I understand that it will require reseeding on a regular basis. Most of the lot is now bare dirt and moss since we also share a lot with huge herds of deer, but if I lime and fertilize the soil, seeds will germinate. Thanks, Ed
I am looking to plant some fruit & nut trees in my yard. I have found that I not only need to know the plant hardiness zone but also the "cumulative chilling hours". These two pieces of information will help me decide which variety has the best chance of doing well in my yard. Could you please tell me where I can find that information for the Elkton / North East / Rising Sun area in Cecil County.
Good Morning, My community recently installed a rain garden (in the last two weeks). The garden looks beautiful and so far is operating well. Unfortunately, we have a resident fox that is digging holes and uprooting plants on a nightly basis. The community tried to trap the fox last year, but he evaded capture. (While we don't have visual confirmation that it is a fox, we're fairly certain that it is as he's been seen in the area, the holes are large, and there are small paw prints.) Last night we tried placing out scent bottles of coyote urine. The fox simply tossed them aside and continued to dig the holes. Do you have suggestions for other possible deterrents? Thank you!
I live in White Plains, MD. Is there a difference between early fall and late fall in this area? If so, when does each begin/end? Thank you.
Charles County Maryland seasons question over 6 years ago
My parents moved into a newly built house, where the builder planted some shrubs in horrible soil, and then hid the soil with too much mulch piled into volcanoes around the plants. So, this little bush (about 1-1/2 feet tall) has leaves that are turning yellow and falling off. I also took a photo of one of the leaves that fell that has a brown spot on it. What is it and what can I do to correct it? Thanks!
I had a large cricket in my sink I tried to drown it with no luck. My question is why did it not drown?
What shrubs are best to plant in clay/lumus soil in an area with all day sun. I plan on mixing humus and miracle grow soil to put the plants in.
A purple maple tree (Crimson King?) in front of my house is showing signs of decline, early leaf drop and damage to vertical section of bark of main stem. Tree is ~20 yrs old, about 20' tall. I noticed early leaf drop to one section including crown last fall, and again this September, 2013. Tree is in full sun. Is there anything I can do to revive this tree?
This spider was hanging outside my house on its web. I am trying to figure out what type of a spider this is.
My Leland's R turning brown 4 no reason that I can see
Hi I have forwarded pictures to Mary Kay Malinoski and attached one here. Have a major problem on west side of four mature white pine. 95% of visible bud growth on west side for this year looks like the picture submitted (Typical). There is a minor problem on the east side (5%). do not know if this is insect or other damage. Only one of several cut open did contain a single larvae. One, pictures sent, had a spent cocoon attached to it. The rest that I have cut open look like the "interior" picture sent to Mary Kay. Impression is that once the 2012 needles drop the west side of the trees will be completely bare. See "Possible 2012 Damage". Assume this will eventually kill the trees? Wes Earp
This is a young oak, 6 feet tall. W noticed the problem his summer, the leaves at the end of the branches are growing curled up, it seams as if they had been pulled up from the main vein, also the older leaves present some whitish spots on the underside of the leaf blade, but not any symptoms on the upper side. The tree is growing in full sun.
This is a Dogwood. It is 2-3 year old. Planted in the front garden, under full sun. Was growing fastan beautifullyuntil the end of this summer when the leaves started looking droopy and the top branches present dark spots on th edges, like freckels.
My friend brought me 4 big buckets of butternuts from western PA. I just discovered they have what I am assuming are husk maggots in them. From my reading that doesn't seem too big a problem but I want to know if these are found in Maryland. I'd hate to be the cause of some new invasive species and will take appropriate actions if you tell me what to do.
We recently removed a large number of problematic stumps & a tree. They were ground to mulch. There's a lot of weeds growing up in the mulch beds. We want to remove the weeds and prepare some of the areas for garden beds, others to be re-seeded for lawn, and some for being turned into a pervious paver patio. We had planned on just putting weed-barrier fabric down for the rest of fall/winter and handling each area when the time was right. Should we also spray an herbicide? If so, which one? Is there a weed barrier that's better or recommended?
I want to plant a flowering dogwood to replace a very old silver maple that was dug up last year. When they cut the tree down & cut up the root, I saw all kinds of lines under there & became quite concerned. I have had Ms Utility come out & show any interfering lines in a 10 ft linear path [because it must be in that area] & the only thing they show are gas lines which they say are 36" below. My question is: Can I safely plant a small flowering dogwood there? If so, can the hole by 18-24" deep if needed? And last, I live in 21222 - is there a retailer selling flowering dogwoods anywhere in this area or the nearest? Any/all help is appreciated. Please reply. THank you. After having our yard, house, and indoor cat treated for fleas, what do you suggest we do to be sure we don't get fleas in either the house or yard again?
Hello, I'd like to know if Purple Loosestrife is banned in Maryland. Thank you.
We are going to turn our grass lawn into a clover lawn due to the amount of water and time we spend pulling crabgrass. We are using a white clover (Mini Clover). Any suggestions as to when we can/should overseed our lawn this fall for best opportunity for success. Thanks
