Ferns near a blue spruce?

Asked January 15, 2021, 1:42 PM EST

My hostas are getting worse and worse in Denver and I wonder if the blue spruce next door is the problem. Could ferns work in that shady spot near a very large blue spruce next door? Thanks.

Ferns grow in Denver but they need the same cultural conditions that hostas need: part to full shade, well-drained soil, and consistent moisture. If you haven't had luck with hostas, I recommend doing an investigation of site conditions and improving any that are lacking before swapping out the hostas for ferns. Also don't plant too deep under the Spruce canopy because the dropping needles can bury plants underneath them and create a barrier to water penetration.
