shrub suggestion for shade

Asked January 2, 2021, 6:35 PM EST

Do you have any suggestions for evergreen shrubs that grow well in shade that can be used as border for privacy around a patio that is mostly in shade with some afternoon sun. I want to plant some shrubs around two sides of the perimeter. i would like these shrubs to grow, preferably fairly rapidly, to height of at least 6 feet or more.

Native shrubs preferred but non-natives suggestions also would be good if there are no good candidates for native plants.

Thank you for help.

Privacy plantings are popular and choosing plants can be a challenge. Plant height is easily found, but limiting the width requires careful selection and regular maintenance. Purchasing large plants will speed up your hedge size, so working with plant nursery professionals will give you the widest selection on the market. Plant choices in nursery stores might be limited. Large plantings require more site excavation, and in existing landscapes can be difficult. Younger plantings with privacy fencing is another option.
Suggestions that readily come to mind are one of the arborvitae. The OSU Landscape plants page lists many, see along the right side of this page. https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/thuja-occidentalis

Natives include Garryas, or silk tassel. https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/garrya
Also Berberis aquifolium (Mahonia, Tall Oregon grape).https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/mahonia-aquifolium
At the OSU Landscape Plants page, use the Woody Plant Search on the dark bar across the top. It’s very useful for questions like yours. https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/
