Apple Pest

Asked December 30, 2020, 4:29 PM EST

I had this type of damage on some of my Jonagold apples this year. The attached photo was taken Sept 19. Could you help me identify the pest? Thank you! David Guss

This appears to be stink bug damage.

Stink bugs damage plants when they insert their beak-like mouthparts into the fruits, buds or blossoms and suck out the sap. If the pests feed on the apples, the fruit might form dimples, sunken areas, blemishes, scars or pitting. Feeding activity sometimes causes pithy or mealy sections to develop in the flesh.

Hope this helps!
