Dealing with Medusa Head Weed
What are some of the best ways to rid a large area of Medusa head weed?
Crook County Oregon
Hi, I'm sorry to hear that you are having Medusa Head issues. Medusa head is similar to cheatgrass in control. In fact, the same chemical that controls cheatgrass, Imazipic, is used for Medusa head. You want to be sure to apply the chemical in the fall for Medusa head. Check the label for the rate. This chemical is harmful to native grasses and shrubs if used at too heavy a rate so it is very important to calibrate your equipment to ensure correct application rate. As you probably know, if you kill the natives the weeds have even better chance at competing for the open space.
Glyphosate or mechanical intervention are generally used in the spring as a follow up to the fall preemergent. Mowing the seed heads before they enter the milk stage will slow down the spread of this grass.
