What is this insect?
Hi. That looks like it is a small native bee. If you look closely, you can see the stinger sticking out the back end. According to this Ohio native bee guide from Ohio State, there are about 500 different types of bees native to Ohio. Many of them are small, but they vary widely in their habits. At least a couple different types are metallic green like the one in the photo, such as one type of mason bee (genus Osmia) and bees of the genus Augochloropsis (which are not pictured in that guide, but can be found in this more detailed field guide from the North American Native Bee Collaborative). More information about native bees can be found in those publications, and the Ohio State Bee Lab is also a great resource for information about native bees. If you go to the “Workshops and Short Courses” link, you will find links to video recordings of webinars on bee identification and other topics.
