How much dead leaves can you put around a tree?

Thank you for your question. Placing leaf mulch around tree trunks helps keep the soil from compacting, adds nutrients to the soil as the leaves decompose and, in the summer, helps retain moisture. Your state's Extension service recommends 2 to 5 inches (see under "natural mulches"): http://extension.msstate.edu/vegetable-gardening-mississippi/mulching I would add that, to make sure winter's moisture reaches the soil, and doesn't get 'trapped' by the leaves, shredding the leaves before applying them is advised.
