Pampas grass

Asked October 24, 2020, 7:20 PM EDT

Hi, I live near Banks oregon. I heard Pampas grass may be invasive? Is that true? I'm thinking of planting it near the entrance to my driveway. Thanks for any feedback Crystal

Thank you for your question, Crystal. Pampas grass is, in fact, a very invasive species which has been studied primarily in California, whose Extension service has a great article indicating why: https://wric.ucdavis.edu/PDFs/pampasgrass%20and%20jubatagrass%20WRIC%20leaflet%2099-1.pdf

Although this article is a bit intensive, the bottom line is that you should never plant it until and unless you can be assured you are planting only the female plant, which is challenging, since many nurseries cannot distinguish one from another, and they pollinate and create invasive seeds. Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

Thank you very much. I will find something else to plant
