Thistles in pasture

Asked October 21, 2020, 6:51 PM EDT

Our pasture is being overtaken by thistles. Cutting, pulling, Roundup on individual plants - each method produces more sprouts. Recommendations?

Thank you for reaching out. Canada thistle is a hard weed to manage and your observations are correct, physical removal of this thistle often results in more plants. This species is able to form new plants vegetatively from small root fragments as well as seed. Timing of herbicides is important for chemical control. This link takes you to OSU's recommendation for herbicide treatments. Please let me know if you need additional information.
