I found this article https://extension.oregonstate.edu/news/asparagus-rewards-patience#:~:text=Varieties%20recommended%20.... Varieties recommended for Oregon by OSU include: Mary Washington, Jersey Knight, Jersey Giant, UC 157 and Purple Passion.

As the article states, you need to plan your asparagus patch for the long-term. It will take 2-3 years to start getting an adequate harvest. You can certainly mail-order crowns and but most independent garden centers will carry some varieties. It may be worthwhile to contact your favorite garden center to ask them what varieties and when they expect to be in stock. You may want to dig the bed now because doing it in early spring could be very muddy and cold.

Thanks so much for your quick helpful - esp about working up the plot now whilevthe weather is mostly clear and mild!
