Tree roots

Asked October 15, 2020, 9:51 AM EDT

We have mature trees at the back of our yard. They have created large, bumpy roots throughout the yard. These are likely dangerous as we age. Hackberry and black walnut. Can i cover the roots with soil? In other words, raise the level of the yard a few inches?

Do not apply additional soil to your yard. Tree roots will only grow up into the new soil and girdle existing roots leading to tree decline. Use 3 inches of mulch to cover roots where they may be the most trouble. If the roots are too dangerous, the only other solution is to remove to trees, roots and all. Your health and your family's health is paramount.
