Mid atlantic native Weeds

Asked October 11, 2020, 10:12 AM EDT

I really appreciate the weed guide on this site. It provides a lot of great information. However, it does not give the native homes for the weeds. Take for example, pokeweed, which is a native to area. I don't mind leaving that plant growing wild in the wooded areas. Plants like stilt grass and oriental bittersweet, are obviously not native, and quite invasive. So my question is would it be possible to update the catalog with the native homes of these weeds?

We are happy to hear you find our online weed guide helpful. We appreciate your suggestion to add information about the native range of the plants that are included. This is information we may be able to add to the website in the future as we update content. In the meantime, an excellent resource for finding out whether a plant is native to the USA or not is the USDA plants database. You can search by plant name and find out if the plant is native to the US or introduced (or both). https://plants.sc.egov.usda.gov/java/

For a more local perspective, the Maryland Biodiversity Project is an excellent resource. If a plant is non-native to Maryland, there will be a note in red text next to the plant name. https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/
