Unknown Grubs in Compost

Asked October 5, 2020, 5:18 PM EDT

I have hundreds of these grubs in my compost bin and while they are decomposing the waste incredibly quickly, I'm worried that they could be harmful in some way. Can you help me identify them? They are each approximately 3/4 inch long, and as you can see, they go from a tan to a nearly black color.

Th critters are soldier fly larvae, common in overly wet compost.

Although considered icky by many a gardener, they do help break down the compost. To help reduce their population, add lots of dry leaves and dry grass clippings.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! My chickens will be thrilled at their new food, and I'm just happy to get some good news --even in 2020!
