pumpkin ripening

Asked October 1, 2020, 4:34 AM EDT

A pumpkin vine trailed under a nearby shrub. A big fat pumpkin was discovered there in its still completely green state. It is large, and on October 1 still connected to is vine. How can I help to ripen it?

Thank you for your question. You best chance for ripening it is to keep the pumpkin attached to the vine, and taking whatever method(s) you can to get as much sun on the leaves as possible. It is the photosynthesis going on in the leaves that sends 'food' to the fruit to help it ripen. If you anticipate freezing temperatures, you'll need to remove it from the vine and bring it inside. Pumpkins don't tolerate cold. Good luck!
