Hello Dee,

This appears to be a Gulf Fritillary butterfly. While several Fritillary species live and breed in Maryland, this outlier only appears from time to time from populations breeding south of Maryland and dispersing northward. While it can use our native Passionflowers (there are two species here) as a host plant, it doesn't appear to, at least not regularly: Where they exist year-round in the south, they do use only Passionflower foliage as a caterpillar food source.
