Is it ok to trim an arborvitae hedge in Redmond, Oregon in October 1 - would like them trimmed, but do not want to harm plant

Hi, You can go ahead and shear back the new growth. Do not shear into old wood. Spring is a better time for pruning. If you prune this week it will probably be okay.
