Hi We have a 3.6 acre property in West Hills Portland and we are having a problem with what we think is mountain aster. Purple flower aster that is invading many areas of our wooded/garden property. Do you have any info that might be helpful?

Thank you for your question. I am wondering if you could send a photo of your plant. There are at least 2 species called "mountain aster. One is the Rocky Mountain Aster (http://fieldguide.mt.gov/speciesDetail.aspx?elcode=PDASTE4040) . The other is the Western Aster (https://inside.ewu.edu/ewflora/symphyotrichum-spathulatum/). Neither is particularly prevalent in our region. I'd suggest we get the plant right before moving on to control. Thanks!

Thank you! It certainly appears to be the Pacific aster. The USDA indicates this may be a protected plant, so I have an email into our state Department of Natural Resources to determine that. (https://plants.usda.gov/plantguide/pdf/pg_syas3.pd). I'll be back to you once I know. Thank you for your patience!
