Butterfly bush

Hello! When is the best time of year to move a butterfly bush? Also - can I split it or propagate it? Thank you! Jennifer Vercruysse

Hi Jennifer!

I love butterfly bushes, but I've had mixed luck with them. I've lost them in a very cold winter, and for what seems like for no reason at all. Keep that in mind. I would try seeds if you have viable ones, or you can use cuttings (see the following link for a How to).

The best time to move your butterfly bush is while it is dormant. I think early spring would be the best time since they are late to break dormancy in mid-spring. This is also a good time to cut it back, since it flowers on new growths. It's also a good idea to mulch it over the winter months. In spite of it being hardy, I know that sometimes it isn't if we have a rough winter. Good luck on your butterfly bush!
