Fir tree needle browning

Asked September 27, 2020, 7:08 PM EDT

About a month ago I noticed the needles, mostly on the east facing side of the tree are turning brown. Seems to also be on the lower third of the tree. The tree is about 20 years old. There’s a blue spruce about 10 ft away.

This looks like a spruce from the photo. https://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/anr-80

Spruce, especially all Colorado spruce which includes blue spruce, have always died after about 20 years from a couple of fungi diseases, but in the past 2 years they have been hit especially hard. Few remain healthy and/or alive.

Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment. Colorado spruce are not adapted to Maryland and, with climate change, that is only getting worse. Here's more information: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/whats-wrong-my-colorado-blue-spruce-tree
