Bug Identification

Asked September 26, 2020, 3:01 PM EDT

Hello. I recently encountered a very strange flying bug that I am hoping to identify. It was black with at 4 long thin wings and big red eyes. It also had an ornate tail end that looked like black leaves. Please see the attached pictures.

What a great find! This is a type of saddlebags (Tramea species). There are four different species recorded in Maryland and you can explore them further on the Maryland Biodiversity Project website. https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewChecklist.php?genus=Tramea

Black Saddlebags (Tramea lacerata) is the most common one. They are a type of dragonfly and they are predators of other insects including mosquitoes. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/predators
