Insect I’ve never seen before

Asked September 25, 2020, 12:11 PM EDT

Hello—I just found an insect on my pole beans, and it wasn’t at all familiar. I’m wondering if it’s anything to be concerned about, or just another fun visitor to my garden. I would estimate its length at about 1.5 inches. Interesting looking critter!

Nice find! This very interesting insect is called a Wheel Bug (Arilus cristatus). It is a good natural predator to have around a vegetable garden since it eats a variety of pests. Be aware, however, that they can deliver a painful bite and we don't recommend handling them. Just observe without touching and let them go about their business.

Here is an article about Wheel Bugs.

This is a fun video and informative video about them.
