What type of black eyed susan is this?
We do think this resembles Rudbeckia but we are not aware of any species with a rounded leaf like this. Was this planted in a garden, or did you find it as a seedling that showed up as a volunteer?
Another plant that looks similar is creeping zinnia (Sanvitalia procumbens), which stays very short (6") but we're not convinced that is a match.
This was given to me by a friend who has a home on the Northern Neck, VA, and identified as a Rudbeckia. When I tried to id it, I could not find one with a rounded leaf either.
Perhaps your friend in VA can help you. They may know where it came from, which would provide a clue. VA native plant associations or extension may be more familiar with plants in your friend's vicinity.
It you solve this mystery, please let us know!
