RE: small Bat in our our house...

Asked September 24, 2020, 1:37 PM EDT

Any suggestions for helping it find it's way out? Sheets over the windows? Our house is an open plan between floors, with vaulted ceilings upstairs. ( We are able to shut the doors to our office, bedroom and bath on that same floo, so are not worried about safely sleeping,e tc.). Just hoping to let it get back to nature..We think it may have entered from the garage, if we left the interior door open to the house..Thank you for any ideas/hints you can give us.

Thank you for your concern for the bat! Leaving one or 2 windows or doors open tonight with minimal (if any) lights on (indoors and out) would allow the bat to sense airflow and find its way out without getting confused by lighting. This might not be possible given the neat design of your home, but you could help quietly "herd" the bat closer to its exit by hanging sheets to reduce the size of the "room" in which it can fly. Using its echolocation for navigation, those sheets will "look" solid and would limit the tiring flying around and through the whole house. Alternatively, if you have a pool (or similar) dipper net and the bat comes to rest, you should first don heavy work gloves and then quietly trap the bat and gently slid a piece of cardboard or stiff paper under until you can contain and carry the bat outside for the release.
I wish you and the bat a quick success!
