Cotton plants

Plants are healthy with lots of buds.......then most buds turned black. What could be the cause?

We can't see a clear cause in the photos, but are you able to cut into a few of the dead buds to see if you can find evidence of insects? Look for small holes in the bud's exterior or signs of frass (excrement, like sawdust or dried crumbles of plant matter) or chewed/missing tissue. If not enough of the blackened buds are left to examine, see if any of the plump buds are showing signs of damage to their base or stem.

Are the plants in an area of the yard that is wet-down often, such as in the reach of a sprinkler used to water garden beds or lawn?
