Marek’s in Lane County

Asked September 22, 2020, 1:01 AM EDT

How common are Marek cases in chickens in this area? Specifically Eugene and lane county. Does OSU do Marek’s testing on live birds and would they show positive because they’re been vaccinated?

Greetings,

Thank you for reaching out to Extension. Yes, Marek's disease is found anywhere there are chickens. Diagnosis of Marek's Disease is by typical symptoms, necropsy and biopsy examination of the tissues. Most diagnostic animal labs can test for this disease in necropsy specimens. The testing is during a necropsy by an Avian Pathologist, you would need to call the lab to determine if there are any options for when the chicken is still alive. They can do the necropsy test at the Vet Diagnostic Lab at the OSU Veterinary School. 541-737-3261.
