When is the best time to plant tulip bulbs in Oakland county? Also, can you place mulch over planted bulbs?
Oakland County Michigan
It is recommended to plant bulbs in the fall when soil temperatures are between 40F and 60F. That usually occurs when the air temperatures are reliably in the 40s and 50s at night. In many parts of Oakland County, we have a lot of pressure from deer in gardens and they do like tulips. If you often have deer on your site, you might also choose some they find less desirable such as daffodils and allium.
There is no issue with mulching over bulbs. I've attached an article that you may find useful with bulb planting. It discusses bulb and site selection, timing, and other factors that increase your chances of spring success. https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/where-are-my-bulbs-why-aren-t-they-flowering
