butterfly and hummingbird plants

Asked September 15, 2020, 3:04 PM EDT

I would like to create a butterfly and hummingbird garden. The plot is 20' by 20'. It is located under a pin oak which is trimmed very high so I would describe the plot as Sunny. What sort of plants should I be considering, and given the time of year are there any plants that I can plant in the fall?

Always plant natives. Here is our page on pollinator gardens, which includes what you want: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/pollinator-gardens#for And much more!

Most plant do well when planted in fall. The exceptions would be broad-leaved evergreens, but you won't be planting those anyway.

Keep in mind that a location under a mature tree will be dry because of all the competition from tree roots. Always plan to water new plants for 2 years to supplement rainfall in dry periods (less than 1" a week) from spring all the way through fall.
