Cherry trees
I would like to know what we can do about the tree trunks are splitting. Can we save these trees?

A photo might be helpful. Whether the trees will survive will depend on how serious the damage is.
Vertical cracks, called sunscald, in thin-barked trees (apples, cherries, maples, etc.) occur because of large temperature swings in winter. Two things you can do to reduce cracking are make sure the trees are well-hydrated heading into winter and protect the trunk from large temperature swings with some kind of barrier. Read here:
