Number of gallons!

Asked September 8, 2020, 12:43 PM EDT

I was wondering how many gallons of water flow from a damm when it's open? I have a house up in Glennie, MI. There is a damm on the Asauble river by I-65. I was up there a couple weeks ago. And all 3 gates we're open. And I was curious how many gallons of water flow thru each gate. Say oer minute, per hour. Just curious! Would appreciate any help you can give me.

Hello,
Thank you for using MSU Extension Ask an Expert for your water flow question. The AuSable River has six dams. Consumers Energy owns all of them. The volume of water flowing from any one dam is regulated by their gates. That being said there is a graph of discharge rate at Grayling monitored by the USGS . It is in cubic feet per second find it at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/mi/nwis/uv?04136500. Discharge rates of the river proper can be found here: https://waterdata.usgs.gov/MI/nwis/current/?type=flow
Connecting with Consumers energy or Michigan DNR may provide more answers. https://www.michiganseagrant.org/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2018/03/12-412-Watershed-Teaching-Guid... this has flow rates of select major rivers in Michigan.
