caring for ferns in Denver garden
My ferns have had a hard year. They are in shade under a crab apple and next to mahonias and evergreen trees in the neighbor's yard and are watered 3 times a week. Should I be 'top dressing" them this fall with compost and/or peat? Or was this just a bad year for lots of plants due to the drought? Guidance, please--thanks.

Yes, I think your ferns struggled because of the prolonged drought and high temperatures regardless of the shade of the crabapple. See the reply I sent to your email from Gardening Help from Colorado Master Gardeners at Denver Botanic Gardens.
